What I do
Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) is focused on management accounting and prospective, forward-looking projections and forecasts built upon underlying strategic and business assumptions. This encompasses both the macro and specific environments a particular company or business operates in. In doing so an FP&A professional must be aware of, and incorporate, accounting (reporting, compliance, tax etc.), finance (capital structure & financing-treasury) as well as strategic planning guidance, policies and objectives.
Good FP&A work involves making sure that that retrospective reporting (variance analysis) provides actionable explanations of variation from goals, targets and strategic imperatives in order to allow corrective measures to be undertaken. Further, FP&A professionals must be able to “translate” operating data into financial terms that allow for measurement, reporting and management.
